Season Of Missteps In Arctic

Shell's initial foray into the Arctic Ocean this season has ended after the oil giant—hampered by its own lack of preparation—drilled only two preparatory holes. The main lesson? The Obama administration needs to take another hard look before it says "yes" to full-scale drilling next year. Earthjustice, on behalf of its clients, filed opening briefs this month, challenging the government's approvals of Shell's oil spill response plans for the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Also in play over the winter is Earthjustice's challenge to the federal lease sale that opened the Chukchi Sea for drilling as well as the air permits allowing Shell's drill rigs to pollute the pristine Arctic skies.
