Vienna Nuclear Conference: The World Is Coming to Its Senses!

Austrian Federal Minister Sebastian Kurz welcomes participants to the Vienna Conference in the Hofsburg Palace
Representatives from 158 nations -- 82% of the world -- gathered in the Hofsburg Palace December 8 & 9 for the Vienna Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons Conference. Messages from Pope Francis and Ban Ki-Moon echoed calls from nation after nation for immediate progress toward nuclear disarmament. At the urging of PSR and others, the United States opted to attend, reversing its boycott of the prior two Humanitarian Impact conferences. Drs. Catherine Thomasson and Ira Helfand represented PSR and spoke at ICAN's Civil Society Forum just prior to the conference. Read more »

Iran Deal Extended But Trouble Lurking

Kerry, Ashton, and Zarif in Oman where the most recent negotiations took place.
The deadline for a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program was extended from Nov. 24th until July 1st, 2015. This is great news since it allows more time to let diplomacy work. However, there are hardliners in Congress who would like to add additional sanctions against Iran in the hopes of pressuring them to accept an agreement. The problem is, these additional sanctions could severely undermine the negotiation process. Expect to see action alerts from PSR in  January after the new Congress is sworn in. Read more »
